Molinia, or the 'purple moor grass" in the wild this grass grows on damp, acidic moorland and woodland soils, it is however very happy growing on any average garden soil in full sun or part shade, it takes a fair bit of dry shade as well once established.

Long, straight flower stems rise above the low, tight basal foliage clump in late summer. This distinct form makes them perfect specimen plants, as well as planted amongst densely planted perennial areas where they jostle amongst flowering perennials with their striking upright flower stems rising like fountains to great effect. Although most are 2m high, they aren't obtrusive as their delicate stems and airy flower heads are easily seen through.
